There are days when I just ought not to ride, I thought, about 15 minutes after I got on yesterday. Trudi was prancy and totally inattentive. Every time we trotted she tried to sneak into canter. No matter what I did she was like "I will not stay round, my back will not stay up, I will take quick little steps and brace my neck high in the sky." I finally got a little trot and let her canter, and the canter was ok, except for flying changes (sorta- they were mostly not clean, just changing in back) whenever my weight shifted, or I tried to straighten her, or move her over. I tried letting her do some medium trot, which she liked, and did very well (when she didn't lose her balance and canter). It still didn't make her tired (though she felt very through and good in her back while we were doing it). I decided we would do some shoulder in, so we did a little walking down the longsides, and then tried it trotting- and she was rushing, and still resisting, and I was trying very hard to get her hind end under, and her hocks flexing, and so, with neck and nose still in the air, she began PASSAGING.
HUGELY.
In shoulder-in.
It made me laugh so hysterically I almost fell off. So then she was like PASSAGE STEP, trot step, PASSAGE STEP, trot step.
I think Schumacher said that if a horse shows talent for passage, you should teach piaffe first. I have noticed she has some natural passage in the past (though never this giant) but she's not really ready for either, at least not when she's being all pyscho...still working on that rhythm and relaxation bit....
So I came home after having ridden/tortured us for about 2 hours, and complained to my husband. I told him I think Trudi is autistic and explained how she was all stupid and then whipped out a GP movement. He said "Wow, your horse is Rainhorse".
Also, I'm starting to wonder if being in heat is part of why she's been such a dork lately- or maybe it's just the cooler weather...
After I got off I turned her loose because she still felt full of piss n vinegar, and waved my arms at her and such. She trotted off a couple of steps and then began eating some weeds. When I put her halter on a few minutes later to lead her back to her pen, she practically dragged me. Maybe she just really wanted dinner. Or to go to K-mart.
