Mar. 31st, 2010 07:45 amYesterday was 80 degrees. FTW.
However, it was also really windy.
And of course, we had a farrier appointment.
She was good though. A little bug-eyed and had the occasional snort, the occasional flinch, but really she didn't do anything. She got some new shoes to accessorize the latest spring fashions, like a new coat (which I will be very happy to see when she is done shedding).
Ride was pretty good- she's been pretty consistant the last couple of weeks- canter still wants to be too quick, but we have times now and then where it is more controlled. Walk and trot have been really good- much steadier and not too quick, and through. I think it's partly her getting stronger, and mostly me doing a better job with my position and awareness and keeping my legs against her sides.
Last night though? Last night Trudi bucked.
Trudi does not buck, unless she throws a shoe - every time she has thrown a shoe, I've seen her buck around the time that I notice the shoe is gone. Maybe 2 or 3 other times in her life she has bucked when turned loose to play. Under saddle? Never. Trudi will spook, shy, rear, dodge, or bolt, but she does not buck. Did she throw a shoe? I don't think so, but honestly, I forgot to check. I didn't see or hear anything.
So yeah, we're trotting along, through the scary corner, round and steady and nice and then suddenly I am going up, and up, and UP. I just sort of went vertical a foot or two in the air. She mostly was up too, but I guess at the pinnacle I went a bit higher because there was a second where I was sort of floating in the air over her. I landed more or less back in the saddle (I think I lost my stirrups) and stopped in the next corner for a second and just sat there dazed for a minute. She stood quietly and unconcerned. I continued on, down the long side, down the next short side, and stopped again and just went, WTF?
No real warning, no sideways motion, her head didn't really go down much, and her hindquarters didn't really go up much more than her neck, but HOLY COW she launched us off the ground. And then continued on like nothing happened. I hopped off and checked the saddle- everything seemed fine, hopped back on, and nothing else happened. SO WIERD.
