Bleh, kinda sick. Just feel crappy no matter what I do. Not the ultimate crappiest, just an unrelenting crappy.
Watched America's Next Equestrian Star (luv u, Tivo). This is the show where 6 people are competing to be Robert Dover's assistant. It's not actually all that horsey. Most of what you see of the horses is short, repetitive clips.
It's just 6 people that aren't like the normal loons you generally see on reality shows, all trying to do their best. The show is obviously trying to make things more dramatic, the way Fox does-- "OMG the horse went lame. We MUST UNRAVEL THE MYSTERY! Was this a PRE-EXISTING CONDITION? Will the horse recover by TOMORROW?" Um, the horse is lame, it sucks, it happens, and no, it probably won't be fine tomorrow, it'll probably still be lame. Move on. We don't need to see Robert Dover fretting for the sake of the film crew. The whole show is basically trying to make something exciting out of something that isn't really- at best it's kind of interesting to those of us that are really into the sport, but not as interesting as it could be because it's not horse-centric.
On the plus side, most of the horses are BEAUTIFUL and the facilities are INCREDIBLE. I would like someone RICH to ADOPT ME and send me to SUMMER CAMP there every year. I will happily camp in a BIG ASS MOTORHOME that I share with 2 other people, parked right next to a lovely dressage arena. You see some big name horsepeople and I'm pretty sure one of the contestants got to ride Kennedy. Robert seems kinda prickly and doesn't strike me as someone I'd really like all that well, but part of that could be for the show. I don't find it engaging though. Compare it to Gordon Ramsey of "Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares" (of course the Fox version is not as good as the BBC's) and "Hell's Kitchen" - he's totally mean to people, swears like a sailor- and yet there is a part of him that seems very sincere and caring, so you not only love to hate him, you love to love him.
I don't know if this show will continue. Considering it's up against shows like "The Next Elvira" (I kid you not) it would seem like even minimal viewership would ensure its survival, but I dunno. I love the idea, and if there was a reality show I wanted to be on, that would be it, but as a viewer I don't think it's that special. I'll watch the series, and see what happens.
