Pretty good lesson yesterday. We did so much lateral work. Lots of leg yields and "REALLY move over". Did some leg yield to 10 m circle to shoulder in. Trudi was feeling full of herself and wanted to canter, but she had to concentrate and it was good to make her really work at the trot instead. She wasn't perfect in the lateral work by a long shot, but it helped her a lot so that she was finally able to get supple and give. She did get to do some of her beloved mediums, but she gets herself so jazzed that she tends to lose her balance and doesn't want to collect the way she needs to do do them really well. I am fighting to keep the new position with my leg under me instead of out in front of me- removing the half pad seems to have helped a little, but sometimes the saddle still slides forward a bit and that sucks. But we did do one medium pretty much perfectly- Trainer was like "Keep those hind legs coming under, really under." and Trudi sat down and went for it, just really sat and REACHED with her arms- Trainer was like "Uh, that would have scored about an 8 in a 4th level test." and later said "I really think she has talent for piaffe (because she can sit well)". So whoohoo Trudi, gold star for us.
The canter work was really good overall- she just all of a sudden seems to have realized she can keep a slower tempo and it's soooo nice to ride. She just wanted to canter and canter but not out of control, and trainer was like "Ok, just let her do this nice canter for a while." so we did. Then we did some work spiraling in - to the right, oh hard... and we did some shallow, single loop serpentines down the longside - first time, she kept the counter canter, second time, flying change. Well, at least she can do both. The flying changes totally set her off, she gets jazzed and goes "Oh holy crap did you see what I did?" and ZOOM tries to run off.
We fought about the stretchy circle again, and at this point I think Trudi was pretty dang tired of bending left- my left arm went numb and I had no strength. I booted her over and she did a half rear and then jumped sideways off just her hind legs- I didn't go off but it was unpleasant. I told trainer I didn't have the strength to have this fight right now, and so we walked and practiced giving to the bit and then stretched that way.
Very very good overall. Lots of not very great stuff but some really inspirational shining moments.
