I am back in the saddle. I am also sore and forgot how that can happen. :)
North Carolina was great- the weather was lovely and I never would have guessed that it could be so dry- it's always been quite humid when we've visited in the past. The ocean was relatively warm, the pool was like a bathtub (mmm, heater) and my kid learned to happily bob about with a swimmy vest on.
Let Trudi loose for a bit before I rode- at first she was all *lumber* *lumber* *trip* - till she decided to let it rip and kicked and bucked and galloped- then she was all floaty and smooth and happy.
Had a lesson and it was GOOD. Trudi did indeed remember something from last week and we did some really good round work. Trainer was impressed and said that she can see we're getting it- she said we are exactly where she wants us and I feel like this is a new phase and a new level I've never achieved before. We are still working at slooowing dooooown and Trudi's natural energy translates to extra bouyancy (impulsion?) when we have a slower tempo. She was a bit of a butt about spooking at some stuff outside- but I pretty much expected it and it didn't worry me at all. She was upset about a large cable spool having changed its orientation since the last time I rode (from on one end to on it's side). Another lady in the arena was trying to help by having her horse go by it and he was like "Hey wait I don't like that either!" ^_^. After a few passes she still gave it the hairy eyeball but was willing to keep going, and I demonstrated my Jedi mind trick of looking at something imaginary scary in the opposite direction, which diminished the spool spooking significantly "What is she looking at? I better look over thataway instead..."
On the other hand, right lead canter was an unexpected treat- much less rushing and much more balanced. We were very proud of our girl. :) I missed her!

We'll see- :) I need to figure it out, because when she is not spooking, or rushing, she is very capable and awesome. ;) When she does spook, the spook itself doesn't really bother me- it's the lack of attention and the loooong time it takes to get her attention back. Teleporting sideways for a stride is no big deal- 8 strides of crappy-above-the-bit-uneven-hollowness is. Then add the fact that she will make a habit of spooking in the same spot, and now we've got like 20 laps x 8 strides = 160 strides of crap- that's a crazy amount of work to lose out on.
I need to be more subtle though- right now a judge would be like "What is that, a nervous tic? Whipping one's body around is not a good aid...!" of course in Trudi's case it would be... ;)
But it's a tough problem really. Punishment doesn't work, reassurance doesn't completely work, just trying to ride straight through it doesn't completely work- so I'm trying to come up with other stuff.
